The Expansion of the Terminal Building at South Bend Airport is Complete

Thursday, February 2, 2012

SOUTH BEND, Ind — South Bend, IN: The St. Joseph County Airport Authority after almost twenty-seven months of intensive work, the expansion of the terminal building at the South Bend Airport is now complete. The first passengers to use the completed facility will pass through the new security checkpoint on Wednesday morning, February 8, 2012. All of the screening equipment has been replaced by the Transportation Security Administration, and they have also provided one of the new scanning devices that are being placed in airports nationwide. This Advanced Image Technology device, known as an AIT, will scan a person’s body, highlighting areas of interest on a cartoon character displayed on a screen seen only by the machine operator. Copies cannot be made. A traveler may decline to use the scanner, but must then undergo a full pat-down procedure. The device is accurate and will speed the screening process dramatically, as long as most everyone uses it. A full demonstration of the device will be given to the area media outlets at 10:00 a.m on Wednesday, February 8, 2012. The demonstration will be conducted by TSA officials, and will be held at the South Bend Airport’s new screenpoint.

The weather has cooperated remarkably well this winter season. Travelers at the airport have had to walk from the ticketing lobby of the terminal to the new concourse via an outdoor covered walkway. So far we have not had any subzero weather, and the snow that we have had did not markedly interfered with this process. The outdoor covered walkway will no longer be necessary now that the entire addition will be open to the public for full use, starting Wednesday morning. We at the airport are grateful for the full cooperation of both the traveling public and also our tenants, who have had to make the best of this construction effort over these past twenty-seven months, and have done an outstanding job. We still have some minor details to finish up, but Wednesday will mark the official end of this fifteen million dollar improvement at the South Bend Airport, making it one of the finest of it’s size in the country. We also want to thank our partners, the TSA, for providing this new screening equipment, and to the officers of the TSA who will be using it to make all of our traveling safer, more secure and more efficient.
